(Borasio Myopic/Hyperopic Regression)


Borasio Myopic/Hyperopic Regression (BMR, BHR) is Dr Edmondo Borasio’s latest and most accurate formula for post laser refractive surgery (LRS) biometry, according to the last analysis performed on his dataset of 136 eyes (unpublished data, presented at the 9th IOL Power Club Meeting in Haarlem, on 12.10.2013).

Dr Borasio is Member of the prestigious IOL POWER CLUB, a private international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the science of optimized intraocular lens power selection algorithms and technology.

How does the formula work?

  1. BMR/BHR only requires IOLMaster®'s K values and axial length (see presentation above).

  1. From the IOLMaster®'s K values, a new corneal power (CP) is obtained according to two regression formulas based on his personal dataset. The resulting CP value is then automatically entered in the SRK/T formula, yielding a suggested IOL power. No double K adjustment should be used.

  1. Three slightly different types of regression were developed (Linear, Logarithmic and Polynomial) and they give similar results in most cases.

  1. According to the latest analysis THE MOST ACCURATE ALGORITHMS to be used are the following ones:

  2. BMR Poly for post MYOPIC LRS eyes.

  3. BHR Lin for post HYPEROPIC LRS eyes.

  1. It is recommended ADDING 0.50 D to the IOL power suggested by BHR Lin and ADDING 0.25 D to the IOL power suggested by BMR Poly to reduce the risk of a Hyperopic outcome.

BMR/BHR should NOT be used in virgin corneas or in eyes after radial keratotomy or other types of refractive surgery different from LASIK or Surface Ablation.

BMR/BHR and BESSt only reduce but does not eliminate the risk of a refractive surprise. You must therefore always compare the results with those from different published formulas and to those of the ASCRS Website. When in doubt, refer the case to a colleague who is specialised in post-LASIK biometry.
