Dr Borasio graduated magna cum lauda from the University of Torino before specialising in Ophthalmology at the same University. A sub-specialist four-year training was then undertaken with multiple Fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK. This included a one year Fellowship in Cataract Surgery with Mr Vincenzo Maurino (2004), followed by an 18 months Fellowship in Laser Refractive Surgery with Mr Julian Stevens and a one year Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease with Miss Linda Ficker. In 2007 he moved to Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, where he set up the corneal service. He worked there till late 2014 and in 2015 he took the position of Head of the Corneal and Refractive Surgery Department in Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi (UAE). Since August 2018, he is Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Burjeel Day Surgery Center (Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE).

In 2006 he developed BESSt formula for the estimation of IOL power in post-LASIK and post-PRK cataract cases and has presented the results of his work at a number of international forums. The original article on BESSt was published on the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in 2006 and the method was described in detail in a book published in 2012 (Elevation Based Corneal Tomography 2nd edition, Jaypee-Highlights, Editor Michael Belin). BESSt 2 was subsequently developed and presented at several international conferences, although it was never published. According to our internal (unpublished) analysis this is still among the most accurate regression formulas in the world for this purpose.

In 2009 he developed Eye Pro, the first ophthalmological app ever released on the Apple Store. Since then, the software has been continuously and meticulously improved with the elimination of bugs and the addition of always new functions and tools. Other apps were also developed, such as AstigMASTER, AstigPLOT, VA Converter and Eye Sketch. The apps are currently being used by thousands of happy ophthalmologist worldwide.

Dr Borasio is member of the prestigious IOL Power Club (a non profit organization devolved to the advancing science of intraocular power calculation) and for many years he has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery.
